Analysis of Form

"Why is this supposed to be art" How often have we heard this question asked- or asked it ourselves, perhaps- in front of one of the strange, disquieting works that we are likely to find nowadays in museums or art exhibitions. There usually is an undertone of exasperation, for the question implies that we don't really know we are looking at art, but that the experts (critics) have established that it is art. Why else would they put it on public display? Clearly, their standards are different from ours; we are at a loss to understand them and we wish they'd give us a few simple, clear cut rules to go by. Then we would learn to like what we see, we would know "why is it art". But the experts do not post exact rules, and the common folk fall back upon his final line of defense: "Well, I don't know anything about art but I know what I like"

-extracted from H.W JANSON [HISTORY OF ART]

Now, people are becoming more aware that there is in fact a barrier which divides, the so called "experts" or a cultured individual, and the regular person who enjoys pretty pictures. Frankly art is becoming confusing too understand, and there is not really a set of rules to go by (on my opinion). There is the fine art, and there is craftsmanship, and because one has the capability to paint the Mona Lisa, it doesn't mean he/she will. A lot of people, including me, are confused about this subject, so the only thing I can say for now is that my works ARE art. They explain my process, my growing, it is the culmination of my skill level, and my passion for it.

Blast from the past!

So I spoke to Julia Yurtsev today...and saw her blog...http://juliayurtsevart.blogspot.com
She said that I should put a portfolio together, but looking through my old stuff, I have to admit...I am light years away from reaching that level. Someone told me to never classify my stuff, and that anyone can tutorial themselves into a great artist...but the very essence of art is experimentation. Well I dont know what that means, but I need a LOT more practice.

Process

Iam in love with the process of making art. It is scary, to even sit down and make the first stroke on the page, which to me is like taking its virginity, and for that same reason I do it anyway. Once I start I dont stop until I feel there is enough charcoal on the page. My analysis of form class is the complete opposite of what I learned from Tyler on Life drawing class...Instead of spending 5 seconds to digest the pose, then drawing the gesture within 10 seconds. This exercise requires extreme amounts of concentration, and it takes 10+ to finish. I love drawing, and these kind of exercises just encourage me to get better, which is why even my life, as a student striving to become an artist, is a process itself.
